I believe water is miscible in alcohol. Or maybe that's vise versa...

In fact, it lies within the water molecule, and to a full beaker of 
water, you can add a fair amount of pure ethyl alcohol, without it 
overflowing.
It occupies the same volume because their molecules are intertwining (or 
whatever they call it!)

Impressive lab experiment!
