Thanks for your comments.

The foreground isn't blank.  On most monitors (all 3
in our household and several at work) there is
planking in the foreground whose diagonal lines lead
into the illuminated buildings (making it Art ;-) )

That said, I think David Savage's editing, which
lightens the foreground, is a real improvement.
