Well, they can't take your stuff from you BUT...Most times by the time you get to the screeners you've waited a while and you're not inclined to go back to your car or house to deposit the offending gack. They'll gladly deposit your property in a bin from which there is no getting your stuff back. TSA sells your stuff.
