How many of y'all carry around a "shopping list" in your head, of photos you want to get someday? I've been doing so for ... a long time now.
There are the "if I ever find my self at or near ____ at the right time of day" ones, and the "I must remember to schedule a trip to _____ in [season]" ones of course. Also the simple "I must remember to get around to this eventually" sort, and the "I don't know when this shot is going to be available near me but I hope it happens" kind. And the frustrating, "this keeps not working but I know the right equipment to do it exists, so someday when I have that gear or can borrow it ..." portion of the list. Some are photos that I know plenty of other people have done, but _I_ haven't, and I want to have a version of that's mine. Some are images that I have in my head that AFAIK don't already exist on film or in pixels (though given the population of the planet one can never be entirely certain that one's idea is unique, of course). When I manage to cross one of these shots off my list, sometimes there's a feeling of relief and/or accomplishment. Other times it's disappontmenr because I realize that my idea didn't look as interesting in a photo as it did in my head. But in any case, I've got a bunch of photos I want to make on my list. Some of these shots are of the "keep an eye out for this" variety and others are of the "I really must get around to planning, setting up, and executing this idea when I have the time and energy" (and in some cases "and money"). I've wanted a bat's belly and wings in flight for several years, and each time I go to a place that predictably has bats, I have to make another attempt. But there are more mundane shots on my list as well. Such as catching my cat using the stack of milk crates that she prefers instead of a scratching post, or a macro shot of a kitten's baby-tooth that has fallen out, or a really _good_ shot of the Baltimore Police Department helicopter in flight (I've got a bunch of attempts I'm not quite happy with). There are some churches here in Baltimore that I keep meaning to shoot at the right time of day, where "get around to setting this up" just means getting in the car at the right time of day and not being on my way someplace else, so I can park and get out and line up the shot right. Others are more artsy: I want to get my hands on a large-format camera with full movements, learn how to use the movements to get the effect I want, and create a wall-sized view into a tiger lilly such that a viewer standing in the right spot may feel as though she's about to fall in. I don't even know for sure that the effect I want is possible, but it's on my list. And I want to borrow a bonsai tree to set in front of the rising full moon to create in one exposure an effect that's usually done with a double exposure or Photoshop. Not because I think doing it my way will be inherently better; just that it will amuse me greatly to know that I've done it. A few, I'm not sure whether they fall into the 'mundane' or 'artsy' category. Like a close-up of a horse's eye showing how much curvature the lens has. A few are on a special, "better get around to this before I'm no longer able to obtain the right kind of film" list. So, do the rest of you have lists like that in your heads? -- Glenn -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
