CS4 officially went unsupported (and wonky) on OS X about Lion or Mountain Lion introduction time. That's several years ago! I'm amazed you were still running it, Paul.
I have CS5.1, which still seems usable on El Capitan. I've hardly used it, however. I've geared most of my work to be either 'done' as it comes out of the camera, or to take very light tuning in Lightroom only.
