:-( ... very sad.. photowise I want to reach inand take away the uglybuilding lurking in the back as if it were sitting on the church's roof ... it would be pretty easy to do, though cheatingfor a newsworthy photo... I hope they restore the church

There are a lot of politics going on behind the scenes here.  The Anglican 
church, who own the cathedral and the land it's on, want to knock it down and 
replace it, but there's a vocal opposition who think it can be made safe and 
restored on a reasonable budget.  Meanwhile the building continues to decay 
while all the money is being spent on lawyers.  I'm actually surprised the 
recent 7.8 quake didn't make the decision for them.
