A stack of thick slices is actually a good description.
Instead of instructing the software to stack all the single exposures in one go, it is instructed to stack them in groups of say, 15. Then when it's done, the groups (slabs) are stacked again to produce the final result.
It's a technique to get better results from deep stacks.
