Thanks for all the suggestions on a K-3 with telephoto setup.
Exposure bracketing with self timer is definitely the best way to go,
it works very nicely and I can get 5 widely spread out stable
exposures with a single shutter press. I’ll set the drive mode
before totality, it keeps it set through power on/off if I’m not
mistaken. i’m only interested in capturing the corona, I won’t be
aiming the lens at the sun except during totality so don’t need a
solar filter, just a timer to make sure I get it pointed away from
the sun before totality ends. Oh, I’ll also use a very wide angle on
my spare body to capture the 360 degree sunset.

Happy eclipse shooting to all those in the US!

P.S. I always read PDML through the web archive, can anyone tell me
how to reply to an article posted there if I’m not getting it via
email?

I just used copy and paste. Snip the portion of the digest you want to
reply to & paste it into a new email; set the subject to "RE:"

It messes up threading for some. Not a big deal in my opinion, because
there are others who mess up threading worse.
