I use SmugMug only for display; I switched to it when new ownership wrecked the user interface in photo.net.
I have my catalogs on a 2TB external drive, and use the SSD in my MacMini for software and the scratch disk. I have TimeMachine backups to two other external drives. Since I have had a couple of very close calls with total data loss, I also have an automatic backup to Backblaze. Obsessive-compulsive? Me??? Never.
