It's impossible to modernize industry & agriculture globally _under 
capitalism_, but _under socialism_ it is possible.  BTW, to modernize 
industry & agriculture is not the same as to "live at current North 
American ecological standards," with each family owning or striving 
to own not just one but two, three, or more cars, the bigger the 
better, driving to work, shop, play, do anything.  The USA is 
inefficient.
