I think he had been a Presbyterian minister -- but I can't remember my source for this. He did indeed have quite a voice. One of the most popular newscasters of WW2 was also a former minister -- Gabriel Heater. I wonder if there are recordings of any of his broadcasts. Sixty years later I can remember the tone and cadence of his voice as on the eve of El Alamein he intoned, "It's bad news tonight, folks." (He always started with either "It's bad news tonight" or "It's good news tonight.") Dirksen was also of the "Class of 1946" that put through the Taft-Hartley act. Carrol
