Japan gives Vietnam $7 million as water aid

AFP

HANOI: Japan has given Vietnam more than $7 million in aid to improve water
supply systems in three northern provinces, officials said on Saturday.

The exchange notes for the 867 million yen ($7.2 million) of non-refundable
aid were signed in Hanoi on Thursday, the Japanese foreign ministry's
website said.

The money will be channelled into setting up water purification and supply
systems in Thai Nguyen, Ninh Binh and Thanh Hoa provinces, the official
Vietnam News Agency (VNA) reported.

Polluted water sources, inadequate infrastructure and water shortages in the
dry season have a serious impact on the health of people living in the three
provinces, it said.

Japan is by far the largest supplier of development assistance to Vietnam,
providing more than 40 per cent of all overseas aid to the communist state.
