Wage slaves are not kept shackled in a barn or branded and sold at auction like farm animals, are they?
-raghu.

Of course not. That's why Marx supported Lincoln. In 2008 Marxists would support a presidential candidate who took strong stands against wage slavery, a system that may not sell people at auctions but results in the deaths of millions of children each year. Diarrhea alone leads to the death of 2.5 million deaths each year. This is a system that is far more murderous than chattel slavery in numbers. The reason people are shocked to hear capitalism (and capitalist politicians) compared to the plantation system is explained fully by Gramsci. I have no patience to repeat his analysis.
