I've come late to this discussion, but having read through the p5p traffic and the mails on this list, I'd like to add more fuel to the fire by describing the multitude of isses I faced when integrating 5.6.1 into Solaris 9, and which ones I expect to face integrating 5.8.x into Solaris 10. For those of you who don't know who I am, I work for Sun, specifically in the Solaris Kernel group. One of my roles is to look after perl in Solaris, and I am also the Solaris 10 assistant technical lead.
I've come across a number of issues myself that have already been raised on this list, and rather than dump them in one huge mail, I'll do a series of smaller ones, hopefully it will make it easier to skip the ones you are not interested in ;-) 1. How we integrate the perl source into the Solaris source. 2. How we build perl as part of Solaris, AKA The Makefile Hacks From Hell. 3. How we package up perl, problems therein, and how I chopped perl in half. 4. Compiler problems. 5. Making perl location-independent. -- Alan Burlison -- $ head -1 /dev/bollocks systematically monetize omnipresent viral critical mass
