You clearly need a magicker variable!
FWIW I use things like DEVEL_CHECKLIB_DEBUG (for example) to make my
code be more verbose when I'm hacking on it. I'd make the magic
variable to run author-only tests something like
DEVEL_CHECKLIB_AUTHOR_TESTS.
