A lookup in an empty list/tree would of course equal a single pointer
comparison, so if someone is not using the feature, there's no
additional cost.
In any case, I'd expect the number of "active" embryonic connections to be pretty low in non-pathological circumstances anyway. You would probably want to have a hard-limit though.
