== PostgreSQL Weekly News - June 7th 2004 ==

After a flurry of activity last week, things settled down a bit this
week. A lot of focus is still on rounding out the rough edges of some of the
bigger features, as well as getting in those changes that folks had been
putting off for a while. A few alpha level bug tests have also started to
trickle in, and you can expect this pre-emptive bug fixing to continue before
we get to an official beta.

The btree index building process was modified to not use shared
buffers, thereby avoiding locking conflict against concurrent checkpoints.
Also the mechanics of WAL-logging index builds were modified to allow for
quicker index build times in some cases. Server side functions to send INT
and TERM signals to other backends were committed. The timezone libraries
were adjusted to remove some boundary behavior issues on the edges of 32-bit
time range (1901 and 2038).

Some more work was done to enable plpgsql to pass composite-type
arguments into SQL expressions, including allowing assignment to whole-row
variables. In a similar vein, most of the back-end has now been made safe for
composite-type columns in tables. There is still some settling that needs to
happen (such as support in the ALTER TABLE command or the exact syntax for
UPDATE) but the code and documentation is now in cvs so it is publicly
accessable.
