The model b has a little stanchion next to the pulley. I think it was 
eliminated on the model D due to the need for space to pull out the 2/4 gearing 
shift. The D was the first model with the factory 2/4 gearing. You could add it 
to the earlier model, but the shift mechanism didn't need so much space to the 
right of the pulley. Is that as clear as mud??
