If you're on Linux/BSD/Unix/MacOS or Cygwin on Windows, this should work:

$tar_gz_file = "filename.tar.gz"; // Replace this with the actual filename.
exec('tar -ztf '.$tar_gz_file,$ret);
print_r($ret);
?>
