If you have other TTFs installed, it's not that difficult to switch to them instead. For instance, on Debian, the default font is not installed (non-free I think), but bitstream-vera was installed. So I switched jpgraph to use vera instead of the default, and it works great. I can't remember exactly where it was, but some quick grepping in the jpgraph folder should show you where.
