That API change does sound like it could be the source of the
intermittent invalid pointer and backtrace result I got (just once) at
run time.  My further test_noninteractive run with your changes
(revision 12270) worked so I will assume you have completely fixed the
problem unless or until I get another segfault or backtrace from
octave.

Thanks for dealing with this octave issue and also the other octave
issues you turned up while looking for the source of the intermittent
run-time issue I discovered.
