Oh, don't get me wrong, there are actually a few good reasons to
top-quote, such as when you are including the entire text below, and simply
commenting _on_ that reply text, rather than commenting _to_ that reply
text.

The core of the top-quoting phenomenon (Lotus Notes aside) is that
when you have a thread of replies 4-5 levels deep (or more), and someone
top-quotes, but leaves the previous 5 replies pasted underneath it, you
never know whom they are responding to, if they don't trim accordingly or
quote in the proper place in the midst of the reply text.

Whatever best suits the nature of the conversation, is a good
general rule, but I think many people use top-quoting more than not, because
either their mail client forces them to (Lotus Notes) or they just don't
understand that it can be confusing after several replies deep. Thas'all.

..and look what happened to the Romans =) Seriously though, whatever
makes it easiest to communicate between your recipients. Remember that your
messages on public lists often go to dozens or hundreds of other users, and
are generally archived somewhere (lists.rubberchicken.org in this case), and
probably indexed by google as well. Clearly communicating context is very
important when someone happens to catch your message without seeing prior
messages on the same subject (i.e. they found your message directly via a
google query).

I didn't realize this topic was going to be such a heated one. Woo.
