As a general rule you want to have a script that regularly checks your
partitions for free space. I remember reading about this even before I
started using Linux (I had the Linux Undercover compilation of LDP
documents). Lalo na kung server. :)

Unless you have LVM, you cannot just add a hard drive and expect to have
extra space for a particular partition. You will probably like to do
something like this, though:

Use your new hard drive as your /var:
 o add hard drive
 o partition hard drive
 o create a filesystem on a partition on hard drive
 o mount filesystem on some temporary point
 o move everything from /var to /temp_mnt_point
 o unmount /var
 o unmount /temp_mnt_point
 o mount the partition you used as temp_mnt_point to /var
