It would help if you provide the list with your partition configuration. All
is not lost though ...
There are quite a few directories that are not necessary during boot. (i.e. -
the linux kernel source - that's about 100mb per release, then there is the
/usr/doc directory, etc ...). In which case, if they are off the "/"
partition, you could move these directories to a different partition and just
symbolically link the directory back to where it should have been to maintain
the integrity of the tree.
There are other things that you could do as well like verifying if the log
files have grown and belong to the root partition. Log files, if not
in a separate partition could get out of hand and consume root space. You
could "logrotate -f /etc/logrotate.conf" and then move the old logs out of
the /var/log directory, if var does not have it's own partition. Then you
could specify in the syslog.conf different directories for logs that tend to
grow quickly. (BTW, you can even split out log records that go to the
messages file for instance into a different file by tweaking the syslog.conf,
and then have the new logfiles write to a different partition.)
You may also want to "rpm -e" out non-essential packages (i.e. - If an isdn
package is installed and you don't have isdn, you may want to remove it. You
may want to keep the CD handy though, in-case you decide later to use it :-)
Hope this helps.
