Almost no difference at all (we had a Ubuntu installation on an
Athlon64 2800+).

Nope. Then again if you'd run 32bit might as well stay with a 32bit
processor. There are distros like Fedora Core and Suse which support
bi-arch - you won't encounter problems running 32bit apps on them. The
problem crops up when you run native arch-based distributions like
Debian - you'd need to place 32bit applications inside a 32bit-chroot
or get ia32-libs installed.

Anyway, given that the i386 is progressing like the other 64bit chips
(sparc, powerpc, alpha) which support simultaneous usage of 32bit and
64bit userland, the current development effort is going for multi-arch
support in the placement of libraries within the filesystem.

No significant issues (well, aside from pointer size translation,
hmm... nothing much really).

It's quite fast due to better design but then again most of the boards
you'd find here (only for socket 754 - no SMP/socket 940 opteron
boards locally available afaik) can't take advantage of its benefits
(yet). Sure you get a bigger bus bandwidth (larger and faster than the
Pentium IVs), NX bit at the chip level, more registers, and heck it
can grok faster in crypto ... then again the even the socket 754
Athlon64 is priced way much higher compared to the Pentium IV's (from
mobo to processor). It's an expensive machine if you won't be able to
fully exploit its capabilities.
