The BBCiPlayer plugin does not use mplayer so doing anything with mplayer would not affect BBCiPlayer plugin ability to play streams.
Stick with problem solving with BBCiPlayer only as AlienBBC uses transcoding which has a different methods to get programs and to play streams. Can your boom play MP3 podcasts ? Can your boom play other internet MP3 streams ? I think there was an issue with AlienBBC with 7.4 but this is fixed in AlienBBC 2.5.
