Iran's military stages war games near Iraq border Mon. 5 Dec 2005

Iran Focus

Tehran, Iran, Dec. 05 – The Iranian Revolutionary Guards' para-
military forces staged a military exercise to prepare against "enemy
conspiracies" in Dasht-e Azadegan in the south-western Khuzestan
Province, near the border with Iraq.

Colonel Majid Saad, commander of Bassij forces in the area, told
journalists that the purpose of the drill was to "increase fighting
potentials, maintain unity, and prepare the Bassij forces to combat
any threat against the Islamic revolution".

Saad gave details of how the Bassij forces attacked "enemy lines".

The Bassij, comprised of Islamist radicals, is a branch of the
Revolutionary Guards.

Soldiers Train fro T.O. terror attck

By VIVIAN SONG, TORONTO SUN
Canadian troops descended upon Toronto this weekend, battling a
series of truck-bomb attacks that killed hundreds of innocents.
At least, that was the scenario the army had the soldiers play out.
About 400 troops and staff officers from the 32 Canadian Brigade
Group set up temporary headquarters at Moss Park and Fort York
Armouries to rehearse emergency response procedures.
The troops were deployed to several sites in the Toronto Docklands.
Soldiers were asked to imagine the city was knocked out by truck-
bomb attacks that disabled the power grid in the core of the city,
knocked out a downtown hospital and caused bloodshed in an office
tower in the financial district.
The brigade's task was to establish a food distribution centre
medical evaluation centre, and temporary warming shelter.
"Army reserve units in and around Toronto are positioned to support
the police, fire and emergency services if they become overwhelmed
by any emergency," said Col. Gary Stafford in a statement.
"We rehearse these procedures every year with different units of the
brigade. It's not a case of developing new skills but of applying
the ones we already have to this kind of challenge," the statement
said.
