Hasan Tiro dies in Aceh hospital The Jakarta Post, Jakarta | Thu, 06/03/2010 1:45 PM | Headlines Hasan Tiro Former leader of the now-dissolved Aceh Free Movement (GAM) Hasan di Tiro died at Zainal Abidin Hospital in Banda Aceh on Thursday, just one day after the Indonesian government officially acknowledged his citizenship. He was 84. Aceh Transition Commission (KPA) spokesman Lingga Dimsyah confirmed the death to the news portal kompas.com. Tiro had been in intensive care for kidney failure and an infection of the respiratory system. It was reported that his heart had stopped beating several times while undergoing treatment. On Wednesday, Coordinating Political, Legal and Security Affairs Minister Djoko Suyanto presented the citizenship certificate after paying Hasan a visit at the hospital. In a modest ceremony, the certificate was received by Hasan's nephew Fauzi Zainal Abidin and was witnessed by Aceh Governor Irwandi Yusuf and former GAM leaders Malik Mahmud and Zaini Abdullah. Hasan lost his Indonesian citizenship after declaring the establishment of the GAM, which sought independence from Indonesia, on Dec. 4, 1976. He fled to the United States before finally residing in Sweden after being granted Swedish citizenship.
