Hasan Tiro
Former leader of the now-dissolved Aceh Free Movement (GAM) Hasan di Tiro died
at Zainal Abidin Hospital in Banda Aceh on Thursday, just one day after the
Indonesian government officially acknowledged his citizenship. He was 84.

Aceh Transition Commission (KPA) spokesman Lingga Dimsyah confirmed the death
to the news portal kompas.com. Tiro had been in intensive care for kidney
failure and an infection of the respiratory system. It was reported that his
heart had stopped beating several times while undergoing treatment.

On Wednesday, Coordinating Political, Legal and Security Affairs Minister Djoko
Suyanto presented the citizenship certificate after paying Hasan a visit at the
hospital.

In a modest ceremony, the certificate was received by Hasan's nephew Fauzi
Zainal Abidin and was witnessed by Aceh Governor Irwandi Yusuf and former GAM
leaders Malik Mahmud and Zaini Abdullah.

Hasan lost his Indonesian citizenship after declaring the establishment of the
GAM, which sought independence from Indonesia, on Dec. 4, 1976.

He fled to the United States before finally residing in Sweden after being
granted Swedish citizenship.

The Helsinki agreement signed in August 2005 by the central government and the
GAM made way for his homecoming in 2008.
