Breaking news: Munir poisoned

"The Indonesian human rights activist Munir appears to have been poisoned during his flight from Jakarta to Amsterdan. When he arrived in Schiphol on a plane of Garuda Airline after a stopover in Singapore he was dead. He was 38 years of age. In the course of the autopsy conducted by the Dutch Forensic Institute (NFI) a fatal dose of arsenic was discovered. This was disclosed by well informed sources in the Indonesian Foreign office. Today the director general for Europe and America in the Foreign office received the NFI-report from the Dutch diplomats. The diplomats also conveyed the request of Den Haag to inform Munir's family as soon as possible. This afternoon Munir's widow, Suciwati, had not been approached yet. The Dutch Foreign Office is of the opinion that a further criminal investigation is justified and conveyed this opinion to the government in Jakarta. The government in Jakarta is taking the matter very serious. The Minister of Foreign Affairs Hassan Wirajuda has informed the President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono personally. In the meantime between the death of Munir and the handing-over of the NFI-report, the president and the cabinet had changed. The new attorney-general, Abdul Rahman Saleh, is considered to be incorruptible and vigorous. This will improve the chances for a criminal investigation. During the Suharto era Munir led various organisations for the defence of human rights. He was known to be very brave. He never shied away from confrontations with the Armed Forces. On invitation of the Dutch aid organisation ICCO Munir planned to attend courses at the University of Utrecht. " Dr. Klaus H.
