A long right click will stop the Place Track or Place Wire mode. The timing of short and long clicks is set by the double click timing - which you change in the OS. Control Panel-Mouse etc. I have never found out why the short and long right click are determined by the double click timing - it may be due to the available information that Windows provides in the mouse messages or it may be a design choice of the programmers (not ideal if this is the case). Slow your double click timing or try practicing flicking the right click quickly to stop just the track you are placing but staying in Place Track mode.
