That's exactly what is happening, thanks for taking the time to reply, and
sorry for the noise.
I confirmed by doing an "amixer scontents", using the up or down arrow key
on the pulse slider, looking at another "amixer scontents" and comparing.
Sure enough, there is an adjustment within the 65k possible values.
