I've had a good experience using PuppetBoard via Docker per the instructions. I encapsulated the "run it" part in a shell script for easy startup. https://github.com/voxpupuli/puppetboard#docker-images That will let you run PuppetDB anywhere you please and run PuppetBoard locally on an ad-hoc basis.
