In my case, MPlayer crashes when I run:
       mplayer tv:// -tv driver=v4l2:device=/dev/video0
(but it works fine with driver=v4l).

But, apparently, xawtv is able to see my webcam as v4l2:

    # xawtv -hwscan

    /dev/video0: OK           [ -device /dev/video0 ]
        type : v4l2
        name : Philips 740 webcam
        flags: capture

and it is able to get video using:
     xawtv -noxv
