hey guys,
after some searching I found the solution: Eclipse or PyDev adds some
environment
variables. Apparently Abaqus crashes if 'PYTHONIOENCODING' is set. So I just
removed this variable within python and it worked.

try:
os.environ.pop('PYTHONIOENCODING')
except KeyError:
pass
# now call abaqus
