Any persistence system is pickle intensive. Aside ZODB, we have Durus also. Do not forget remote call systems, like Pyro or most instances of parallel python attempts. pickle/cpickle performance is important. In fact, I find "disturbing" that "bencode" (from BitTorrent), done 100% in python, is faster that cPickle.
