if column < 255:
lnotab.write_one_byte(column)
else:
lnotab.write_one_byte(255)
lnotab.write_two_bytes(column)
I might even write four bytes instead of two in the latter case,
A slight improvement would be:
if column < 255:
lnotab.write_one_byte(column)
else:
lnotab.write_one_byte(255)
lnotab.write_two_bytes(column - 255)
