I didn't know multiple paths could be used there (lack of documentation), though it makes sense. Though pymod is not part of the problem, it's python itself. So it should be:
/usr/bin:/Library/Frameworks/GDAL.framework/Versions/1.7/Programs/ Once Python is found in /usr/bin, the GDAL pymod will be in the python sys.path. ... and that works.
