QL and Gold Card is certainly a good place to start. The Gold Card has
a faster processor than a standard QL and 2MB of memory plus ability
to handle up to 4 disk drives with the right cables and adaptors.

Any special interests - basic or C programming, or hardware tinkering
or whatever?
