Quanta members will know that the last Quanta Magazine they have received was
the June/July 2008. We have been promised an emergency August/September/October
2008 issue but this is now almost 2 months late.

One consequence is that membership renewal forms will almost certainly be
received by members too late to be returned to the treasurer by the end of this
year. This has important consequences for any member wishing to stand for
chairman or other Quanta office.

On two occasions in the past Quanta committees have ruled nominations invalid
because the nominee had not renewed his subscription before 31st December. The
last occasion was in 2004 and the committee made their decision in spite of the
fact that the renewal forms had not been sent out on time.

There are some eerie similarities between the situation in 2003/2004 and
2008/2009. The Quanta Magazine was in serious difficulties because of problems
with a new editor and was on an emergency publishing schedule and severely
delayed. You should also note that both John Mason and John Gilpin were on the
committee that made the decision and it is thus reasonable to assume that they
will take the same view today.

Any person wishing to stand for chairman or other office and their nominators
should not wait for their membership renewal form, but pay their 2009
subscription straight away.

It has not yet been published but it is now possible to renew your subscription
online via the Quanta website. You will find the link on the top left of the
home page. (And in this connection my thanks to Quanta for taking an off the
record telephone conversation I had about 12 months ago with the treasurer
seriously.)

Best Wishes,

Geoff
