As the labels will be generated based on input data, this would be a bit of

You could use CSS transformations to rotate text, but this will only work
in browsers using the webkit and mozilla rendering engine.

That's not really an option, as many users will probably use IE,
unfortunately.

If text, written from top to bottom is ok for you, you could stack single
character labels in a vbox. But I am not sure if you want to put that much
effort into this...

I'll try that first and see how it performs and looks.
