I tried your example and it works.
Here are a few things for you to check out, so you can find where the
problem is in your setup:
 - do you load your qooxdoo app from : 192.168.56.101 host , or from
file:///PATH ?
 - does your webserver prints Content-type: application/json for your php
file response ? check out the doc for Xhr:
http://demo.qooxdoo.org/current/apiviewer/#qx.io.request.Xhr
it says: Automagic parsing of response based on content type .
 - if it gives you success on non existing php files, maybe the webserver is
configured to return a certain page for those cases too.
