okay, I understand. 
So from my point of view Selenium 1 is much more attractive regarding
cross browser tests with ohne code base, isn´t it ?  It´s more like an
alternative concept than like a new version. ;-)

The WebDriver approach is to build a separate Driver for each browser,

using the technology best suited to it. For example, the Firefox driver

is implemented as a FF add-on and supports JS execution so it might be

possible to migrate existing user extensions. The IE driver, on the 
other hand, I believe is written in C++ and uses Windows APIs to 
simulate interaction so JavaScript won't work. I haven't found anything

like a driver-agnostic extension API in WebDriver so far.
