I can't quite parse your question, but I think the answer is in the
Writing R Extensions manual, section 1.1 "Package Structure".


Right, and "-" is not allowed (but used as a version number separator).

It took me 10 seconds to find out by creating a package "a-b" that does not R CMD build with a proper error message - reading the docs would also result in the same finding, but takes a minute or two.
