No patch is needed on Solaris, where one compiles readline from the sources.
There is no `CLEDITOR' env variable (as in S-PLUS): use of this is controlled by the --no-readline flag which defaults to on. Look back at the installation output: it will have told you if readline was detected. (Most likely it is not even installed.) See the R-admin manual for more details.
