The Land of Matriarchy, located in the
center of West Sumatra (Indonesia) and Negeri Sembilan
(Malaysia). The
Minangkabau Ethnic Group is One of The Main Tribe
in INDONESIA, occupying the Central Sumatra Island as
Their Homeland.
The Land, Ricefields and Houses are passed from mother to daughter or to a close Female Relative. The Adat or custom encourages democratic thinking where differences are resolved by discussion or 'Musyawarah' until an agreement known as 'Mufakat' is reached. This applied as much to village councils as to familiy elders.
Now Predominantly Moslem, The Minangkabau Society has, neverless, still adheres to the matriarchal system-one of the last few remaining in the world where women hold sway and wealth.
The Family House usually has four to six points whilst in front are two rice barns.
It is Mark of Minang Hospitality that one barn holds the family rice whilst, the other is traditionally meant for guests.
The front hall of the house is To RECEIVE Guests while living quarters for the daughters and their families flank the sides.
