I've narrowed it down to the Cairo code.
I ran Draw._moltoimg manually, and the d2d.GetDrawingText() call returns b"".
If I do
del Draw.rdMolDraw2D.MolDraw2DCairo
then the image generation code will fall back to MolToImage, and give me an
inline depiction in the notebook.
