I got my DNS working.  I had made lots of typo errors, and had been
confused between the "local" configuration and the "zone"
configuration.  The article which really helped was "Setting up a
basic DNS server for a domain" by Craig Richmond.  The article can be
found at http://www.dns.net/dnsrd/docs/basic.txt.
