This is a real issue for some new hams. They get inspired to participate in 
local emergency groups, attend classes, get their Tech license, then go looking 
for the "most bang for the buck" in a handheld. Some get so discouraged at the 
complexity of their radios they're never heard from again.

Learning the radio is now more daunting than passing the license exam.

  Yeah, I agree. Some of the radios that I own I hate because you have to go
  through menus for even simple things like PL selection, which is a royal
  PITA while you're driving. Give me an X9000 with MPL, scan, and monitor
  buttons and I'm happy...
