Github user wangmiao1981 commented on the issue: https://github.com/apache/spark/pull/18496 Actually, the udf in transform() of StringIndexer.scala, will throw an exception in action. But, it doesn't stop the execution of collect(). val indexer = udf { label: String => if (label == null) { if (keepInvalid) { labels.length } else { throw new SparkException("StringIndexer encountered NULL value. To handle or skip " + "NULLS, try setting StringIndexer.handleInvalid.") } } else { if (labelToIndex.contains(label)) { labelToIndex(label) } else if (keepInvalid) { labels.length } else { throw new SparkException(s"Unseen label: $label. To handle unseen labels, " + s"set Param handleInvalid to ${StringIndexer.KEEP_INVALID}.") <=== this is the exception. } } } I am asking other people who are familiar with this logic to understand why it doesn't stop the collect().
