[for English version please scroll down] Hallo rohrpostler,
Sprache: Englisch. Ort: ZK/U Berlin, Siemensstr. 27, 19:30 Uhr. Fr - 09.11. P E R F O R M A N C E & T A L K : Die KI-getriebene Welt wird angeblich immer intelligenter – doch intelligent für wen? Sprache: Englisch. Ort: ZK/U Berlin, Siemensstr. 27, 19:30 Uhr. Sa - 10.11. T A L K + W O R K S H O P R E S U L T A T E : Was bedeutet es, Logistik-KI herauszufordern? Sprache: Englisch. Der Eintritt ist frei. Ort: ZK/U Berlin, Siemensstr. 27, 15:00 Uhr. Mehr Infos gibt es hier: https://bit.ly/2JEVfZk ---------------- How can we rethink political agency in an AI-driven world? *AMBIENT REVOLTS* BG Annual Conference 2018 | November 8-10 | ZK/U – Center for Arts and Urbanistics | Siemensstrasse 27 | 10551 Berlin https://ambient-revolts.berlinergazette.de The growing interconnectedness of everyone and everything is transforming our world into an unprecedented techno-social environment. The boundaries between atmosphere and politics are being suspended; already, tiny ruptures can cause cascade-like repercussions – think of cyber-attacks or stock market crashes, right-wing resentment or hashtag-based protest. Such ambient revolts are increasingly driven by artificial intelligence (AI) – involving human interaction but seemingly beyond human oversight. Set against this backdrop, the conference poses the questions: What are the techno-social logics of both regressive and repressive tendencies? What are emancipatory movements up against? What potential do micro-political acts have in day-to-day life? What regulations of automated systems at the macro level will enable democracy to emerge in the age of AI? The Berliner Gazette conference will explore these questions in the context of performances, lectures and workshops. Here an overview of the public program: *THE HIDDEN AGENDA OF AI* | Nov 8 | 7:30 p.m. Do self-learning algorithms have their own agenda for a better world? Two speakers will look for answers: Louise Amoore (UK) researches in the areas of global geopolitics and security, focusing on how forms of data, analytics and risk management are changing the techniques of border control and security. Tanja Sihvonen (Finland) is a professor in communication studies and specializes in digital media, computer games as well as participatory cultures on the internet. Her current research on AI and algorithmic agency in social media raises critical issues of gender bias and ethics. Moderated by Berlin-based political consultant and activist Sandra Mamitzsch, this talk will put the hidden agenda of AI up for debate. This talk will take place at ZK/U on Thursday, Nov. 8, at 7:30 p.m. Limited seats, free entry. *ARTICICES OF INTELLIGENTSIA* | Nov 9 | 7:30 p.m. The AI-driven world is supposedly getting ever more intelligent – but intelligent for whom? Two up-and-coming artists will look for answers: Kim Yong Hun (South Korea) of the art collective Shinseungback Kimyonghun created the "Animal Classifier" - an AI trained to divide animals into arbitrary classifications to foreground the imperfections in algorithmic classification systems. Dzina Zhuk (Russia) who with Nicolay Spesivtsev (Belarus) is co-founder of the art group EEEFFF, contextualises digital city infrastructure in the context of complex and autonomous AI systems. Moderated by L.A.-based journalist Claudia Nuñez, this talk will explore artistic strategies in a techno-social environment of runaway bots, AI bias and digital trash. This talk will take place at ZK/U on Friday, Nov. 9, at 7:30 p.m. Limited seats, free entry. As a warm-up to this public talk the artist-driven artificial intelligence SAZAE Bot (Japan) will stage the performance "sleeping bot", exploring the algorithmic unconscious. *CHALLENGING LOGISTICAL AI* | Nov 10 | 3 p.m. What does it mean to challenge Logistical AI? Two speakers will look for answers: Evelina Gambino (Italy/Georgia) undertakes grassroots inquiries into logistics – today the largest playing field of AI-driven circulation –, focusing on the movement of labouring bodies and objects as well as the spaces they create. The architect and researcher Sandi Hilal (Palestine) works on education in refugee camps, empowering the invisibilized actor of the circulation management regime as a political subject in his or her own right. Moderated by Berlin-based critic Krystian Woznicki this talk will explore how to organize within and against an increasingly AI-driven form of logistical power that has the capacity to engender spaces, politics, and subjects. This talk will take place at ZK/U on Saturday, Nov. 10, at 3 p.m. Limited seats, free entry. As a warm-up to this public talk, the workshop groups will pitch the results of their two and half day process: position papers, multimedia stories and experimental projects. *THE OTHER SIDE OF AI* | Nov 10 | 7 p.m. If today's world is increasingly characterized by completely efficient operations, and if, as AI suggests, they are increasingly automated and self-learning, then moments that go far beyond pure functioning and bring to light the flip side of the system can foster creation. The closing event explores the systemic relationship between supposedly useless things (leftovers) and unprogrammed incidents (glitches): What is the connection to the respective other of the system? Can the artistic combination of leftover and glitch create new forms of community? Pepe Dayaw (Philippines) will expand his cooking performance into a Gesamtkunstwerk of dance and music, opening up a space for new forms of community that can emerge when the boundaries between producer/artist and user/viewer become permeable. After the cooking performance, Melanie Gilligan (US) will present her multi-episode drama “Popular Unrest”. It is set in a future much like the present, where a rash of unexplained killings is haunting the planet. Though they often take place in public, witnesses never see an assailant. Just as mysteriously, groups of unrelated people are suddenly coming together everywhere, amassing new members rapidly. Unaccountably, they feel a deep and persistent sense of connection to one another. This performance will take place at ZK/U on Saturday, Nov. 10, at 7 p.m. RSVP: speisek...@zku-berlin.org Ticket: 10 Euro. --------------------- Background Material --------------------- In the following section you will find texts and interviews by/with key note speakers, workshop hosts and conference organizers. *The Politics of Artificial Intelligence* Interview with Louise Amoore Read: https://www.eurozine.com/politics-artificial-intelligence/ Retweet: https://twitter.com/AmooreLouise/status/1054794003072344066 *The Politics of AI in the Smart City* Report from Moscow by EEEFFF Read: https://www.rosalux.de/publikation/id/39459/ Retweet: https://twitter.com/rosaluxstiftung/status/1055349513706262528 *On Shinseungback Kimyonghun's Animal Classifier* Text by Monica Monin / excerpt from: "Unconventional Classifiers and Anti-Social Machine Intelligences" Read: https://berlinergazette.de/wp-content/uploads/aninal-classifier.pdf *The Politics of AI-driven Financialization* Interview with Max Haiven Read: https://transversal.at/blog/the-politics-of-ai-driven-financialization Retweet: https://twitter.com/berlinergazette/status/1057945101153067008 *Okay, Trump, mach mal* Text by Krystian Woznicki Read: https://www.rosalux.de/publikation/id/39331/okay-trump-mach-mal/ Retweet: https://twitter.com/rosaluxstiftung/status/1045691940182921216 *Zwischen Autokraten-Rennaissance und KI-Hype* Interview with Magdalena Taube and Krystian Woznicki Read: https://bit.ly/2Re3gaQ Retweet: https://twitter.com/DasFilter/status/1046707604972589058 - Please re-tweet this link to the AMBIENT REVOLTS program: https://twitter.com/berlinergazette/status/1055065412231221248 Stay tuned, Krystian (for the BG team) -- -------------------------------------------------------------- BG – Berliner Gazette | since 1999 | http://berlinergazette.de -------------------------------------------------------------- UPCOMING BG ANNUAL CONFERENCE: AMBIENT REVOLTS – Nov 8-10, 2018 https://ambient-revolts.berlinergazette.de -------------------------------------------------------------- DOCU OF LATEST BG PROJECTS: FRIENDLY FIRE – BG Annual Conference 2017 https://berlinergazette.de/friendly-fire SIGNALS – Exhibition of the Snowden Files http://berlinergazette.de/signals -------------------------------------------------------------- BG BOOKS OUT NOW @ DP: FUGITIVE BELONGING https://diamondpaper.net/title_27 A FIELD GUIDE TO THE SNOWDEN FILES http://diamondpaper.net/title_26 AFTER THE PLANES http://diamondpaper.net/title_25 -------------------------------------------------------------- -- rohrpost - deutschsprachige Liste zur Kultur digitaler Medien und Netze Archiv: http://www.nettime.org/rohrpost http://post.in-mind.de/pipermail/rohrpost/ Ent/Subskribieren: http://post.in-mind.de/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/rohrpost/
